Description:
Furnas sits near the volcanic lakes and grottoes that give São Miguel its nickname, the Green Island. The original nine holes opened in 1936, designed by the Scottish architect Philip Mackenzie Ross, the first course built anywhere in the Azores. Cameron Powell later extended it to a full 18, matching Mackenzie Ross's style so closely that today it's genuinely hard to tell which nine came first.
Cryptomeria trees separate the fairways throughout, giving the course a distinctly Scottish feel rare anywhere in Portugal. Nearly every fairway is undulating, calling for a full range of shots from tee to green, and the greens themselves are excellent, full of subtle borrows that reward local knowledge over raw power. Water comes into play along several fairways, adding another layer of decision-making to an already thoughtful layout.
For golfers who appreciate proper design pedigree over flashy extras, this is the round to book on São Miguel. The clubhouse, driving range and resident professionals round out a genuinely traditional golfing day, set in one of the most naturally striking parts of the island. If you're chasing a taste of classic, links-influenced golf without leaving the Azores, Furnas is the one.
